Dolores Hidalgo & Atotonilco

Visit the beautiful town of Dolores Hidalgo, cradle of Mexico’s Independence movement. See it’s magnificent church, it’s museums, local crafts and taste their delicious hand made ice cream flavors. After that, we’ll see the incredible paintings at the Atotonilco Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

First, we’ll head from San Miguel towards the city of Dolores Hidalgo, the cradle of Mexican Independence. We’ll arrive directly to the Church of our Lady of Dolores, where we’ll admire it’s beautiful baroque facade and go inside to see the incredible wood carvings with which it is decorated.

After the church, we’ll talk about Mexico’s independence, it’s roots, causes and effects on past and current culture. The city itself is a monument to Hidalgo (the man behind the independence movement) so murals of him and the movement decorate the city.

We’ll visit the Casa Hidalgo museum, where we’ll see how the the town became famous for it’s ceramics and vineyards. After that we’ll head to the main square to enjoy one of the many many ice cream flavors that the town is famous for. You can try avocado ice cream, or mole ice cream, even seafood ice cream (not for the faint). More easily accessible and delicious flavors are also available so don’t worry!

We’ll enjoy our ice cream  while taking a break under the shade in the plaza and we’ll dive deeper into local history and culture.

Finally we’ll visit one of the oldest traditional cantinas in Dolores, where we’ll taste some locally produced mezcal. After that we’ll see a ceramics shop/workshop, one of the most colorful in the city where we can learn and appreciate the process of this art form.

On our way back to San Miguel, we’ll stop at Atotonilco, to visit the Sanctuary considered “The Sistine Chapel of America”, here we’ll appreciate the frescos that were painted in the 18th century, considered the highest expression of Mexican Baroque. After that we’ll head back to San Miguel for a half day tour full of Mexican culture, history, colors and flavors.
